Sasuke Uchiha is a co-lead of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto and Naruto Uzumaki's rival on Team 7. One of the last survivors of the Uchiha clan, he spends most of the story as an avenger — hunting the brother who destroyed his family — before a long, hard road back from revenge toward redemption.
Sasuke was born into the Uchiha clan of Konohagakure, the younger son of the clan's head, Fugaku, and his wife Mikoto. His older brother Itachi was a prodigy the whole village watched, and Sasuke spent his early years trying to be seen the way Itachi was seen.
That childhood ended in one night. Itachi killed every member of the Uchiha clan, their parents included, and left only Sasuke alive. He told his younger brother to hate him, to hold onto that hatred, and to grow strong enough to one day take revenge. Sasuke was a child when he was handed that instruction, and he built the rest of his childhood around it.
He stayed in Konoha and returned to the Academy, but he kept his distance from everyone around him. Classmates read him as cold and arrogant. What they were seeing was a boy who had decided that bonds were a distraction from the single task that mattered. He called himself an avenger.
Sasuke is placed on Team 7 with Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno under Kakashi Hatake. He treats the assignment as a delay to his real goal, but the early missions — the Land of Waves, the fight against Haku — pull him into caring about the team in spite of himself.
During the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru marks Sasuke with a Cursed Seal. Soon after, Itachi comes back to Konoha, and the gap between the brothers humiliates Sasuke. He decides his bonds with Team 7 are the weakness holding him back.
Sasuke accepts Orochimaru's offer of power and leaves Konoha. Naruto chases him to the Valley of the End; Sasuke wins the fight but cannot bring himself to kill his friend. He walks away a missing-nin.
After years of training under Orochimaru, Sasuke turns on his teacher and absorbs him before Orochimaru can claim his body. He assembles his own team, Taka, and sets out to find Itachi.
Sasuke finally fights and defeats Itachi — the goal his entire life had pointed toward. Itachi dies with two fingers pressed to his brother's forehead, the same gesture from their childhood.
Sasuke learns that Itachi destroyed the clan on Konoha's orders, to stop an Uchiha coup, and shielded Sasuke to the end. Grief hardens into a new target — the village itself — and Sasuke enters the war as a wild card no side can predict.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War the Sage of Six Paths grants Sasuke the Rinnegan. He fights beside Naruto against the war's final threat, then against Naruto one last time at the Valley of the End. He loses, accepts the loss, and chooses to come home and atone.
Sasuke is a prodigy. Where Naruto grinds a technique into place over weeks, Sasuke tends to absorb one almost on sight. His chakra natures are Fire and Lightning, and he fights with ninjutsu, genjutsu, swordsmanship, and precise taijutsu at once. His real edge is his eyes — the Uchiha dōjutsu, which he develops further than nearly anyone in the series.
Sasuke's dōjutsu line. He inherits the Sharingan from his Uchiha blood, awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan after Itachi's death, takes Itachi's eyes for an Eternal Mangekyō, and finally receives the Rinnegan from the Sage of Six Paths.
A blade of lightning chakra concentrated in the hand. Kakashi created the technique and taught it to Sasuke, who built sword and senbon variants of his own.
Black flames cast from the Mangekyō Sharingan that keep burning until the target is gone. With Kagutsuchi, Sasuke shapes them into spikes and walls.
A giant spectral warrior summoned around him once both Mangekyō eyes are awake. Sasuke builds it up from a rib cage to a fully armoured figure.
Sasuke draws real lightning down from a thundercloud rather than spending his own chakra. The strike lands the instant he calls it.
Itachi Uchiha
Sasuke's older brother and, for most of the story, the target of his revenge. Itachi destroyed the Uchiha clan under Konoha's orders and spared Sasuke alone. Only after killing him does Sasuke learn that Itachi acted out of love, not cruelty.
Naruto Uzumaki
Sasuke's rival on Team 7 and the character Kishimoto built as his opposite — reserved where Naruto is open. Naruto refuses to give up on him through every defection, and that refusal is what finally reaches him.
Sakura Haruno
A teammate on Team 7 whose feelings for Sasuke went unanswered for most of the series. She tried to stop him the night he left Konoha, and stayed on his side long after most people would have given up.
Kakashi Hatake
Team 7's leader and the first to train Sasuke directly. Kakashi taught him the Chidori and tried to steer him off the path of revenge — advice Sasuke set aside until much later.
Orochimaru
The rogue Sannin who offered Sasuke power in exchange for his body. Sasuke took the training, despised the man, and absorbed him before Orochimaru could complete the possession.
Karin
A sensor-type kunoichi and a member of Taka, the team Sasuke formed to hunt Itachi. Her tracking and healing kept him alive through fights he should not have walked away from.
Suigetsu Hōzuki
A swordsman of the Hidden Mist and a member of Taka, recruited by Sasuke for his skill with a blade and his own goal of collecting the Seven Swordsmen's weapons.
Fugaku Uchiha
Sasuke's father and the head of the Uchiha clan. With Sasuke's mother, Mikoto, he was killed in the clan massacre — the loss that set the direction of Sasuke's entire life.
