   An older Root member, Shin, finds Sai's gift for drawing and becomes, in everything but blood, his brother. Root's training demanded the two fight to the death; Shin died of illness first, and the conditioning buried the loss.

   Sai is placed on Team Kakashi as a replacement for the rogue Sasuke. Tactless and unable to tell a cruel remark from an honest one, he sets his new teammates against him almost at once.

   Watching Naruto refuse to give up on Sasuke, Sai begins to understand what a bond is. He starts to feel again, remembers Shin, gives his first genuine smiles — and rejects the teachings of Root.

   By the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sai fights as a full member of his generation — beside friends he chose, not handlers he was assigned.
