Jiraiya is one of Konohagakure's three Legendary Sannin and the Toad Sage of Mount Myōboku. A wandering spy and a bestselling novelist, he is best known as a mentor — he trained the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, and later took Naruto Uzumaki as his final student before dying to gather intelligence on the Akatsuki.
Jiraiya enrolled in Konoha's Ninja Academy and was placed on a team with Tsunade and Orochimaru under Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage. He was the clumsiest of the three students, and the slowest of them to be taken seriously.
During the Second Shinobi World War, the three survived a battle against the Ame leader Hanzō, who was impressed enough to name them the Legendary Sannin. Jiraiya later trained in senjutsu with the toads of Mount Myōboku, which earned him the title Toad Sage.
He never settled down. Jiraiya spent his life travelling — gathering intelligence for Konoha, writing the novels he was quietly proud of, and searching for the student the toads' prophecy said would change the world. He thought of his own student Minato as a son, and became godfather to Minato's child, Naruto.
Jiraiya trains under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. He is the slowest of the three to find his footing — the student nobody yet expects much from.
During the Second Shinobi World War, the three of them survive a battle with the Ame leader Hanzō, who names them the Legendary Sannin. Jiraiya goes on to train in senjutsu at Mount Myōboku and becomes its Toad Sage.
The Great Toad Sage foretells that Jiraiya will teach a student who reshapes the world. Carrying guilt for the war, Jiraiya stays in Amegakure to train three war orphans — Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan — then leaves them behind.
Jiraiya turns down the role of Hokage, letting Minato take it. He becomes Konoha's spymaster and a bestselling novelist, travels constantly, mentors Minato, and stands as godfather to Minato's son.
After Sasuke's defection, Jiraiya takes Naruto on a long training journey, teaching him toad summoning and the Rasengan. Somewhere along the way he decides Naruto, not Nagato, is the true Child of Prophecy.
Jiraiya goes alone into the Hidden Rain to spy on the Akatsuki's leader, and finds Pain is the path his own former student took. Ambushed and killed, he uses his last strength to send back a coded message that lets Konoha undo Pain.
Jiraiya is ranked among the strongest shinobi Konoha ever produced. He signed the toad contract as a boy and trained in senjutsu at Mount Myōboku, which lets him enter Sage Mode and fight with natural energy. He commands earth, fire, and water release and a heavy toad-style taijutsu — and he wrote a bestselling novel series on the side.

The spinning sphere of chakra created by Minato. Jiraiya learned it from his own student, and later passed it down to Naruto.
Jiraiya holds the contract with the toads of Mount Myōboku, summoning fighters as large as the chief toad, Gamabunta.
A combination technique — a summoned toad sprays oil and Jiraiya ignites it, turning the spray into a sweeping wall of fire.
Jiraiya hardens and extends his hair into a defensive shell of spikes. It can shield him completely or impale anything that comes too close.
Naruto Uzumaki
Jiraiya's godson and his final student. The two travelled together for years, and Jiraiya came to see Naruto as the grandson he never had — and, in the end, as the student the prophecy meant.
Tsunade
A fellow Legendary Sannin and Jiraiya's teammate since their Academy days. He cared for her his whole life, with the kind of openness she never quite returned.
Orochimaru
The third of the Sannin, and the teammate Jiraiya could not save from himself. Their rivalry ran from childhood to the day they faced each other as enemies.
Hiruzen Sarutobi
The Third Hokage and the sensei of Team Hiruzen. He trained Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru, and trusted Jiraiya with the village's hardest secrets.
Minato Namikaze
The student Jiraiya thought of as a son. Minato became the Fourth Hokage, named his own child after the hero of Jiraiya's novel, and asked Jiraiya to be the boy's godfather.
Nagato
An orphan Jiraiya trained in Amegakure, and once believed to be the Child of Prophecy. Nagato became Pain — and the student who, years later, killed his own teacher.
Yahiko
One of the three Ame orphans Jiraiya trained, and the original leader of their group. His death set the surviving two on the path to founding the Akatsuki.
Konan
The third of the Ame orphans Jiraiya trained. She stayed at Nagato's side through everything that followed.

Konoha Crush & Tsunade Search
Jiraiya is a moderate-signal answer with one column that gives him away outright. His Attributes column reads Legendary Sannin — a title held by exactly three characters in the entire roster — alongside Sage Mode and a summoning contract. Once that lights up, the pool is tiny. His Senjutsu jutsu type supports it. The rest of his profile is unremarkable: a Konoha Jōnin with no clan and broad chakra natures. Jiraiya debuts mid-series, in the Search for Tsunade arc, so the Debut Arc arrow can point either way — read it rather than assume.
