The Rinnegan
The legendary dōjutsu Madara secretly gave Nagato as a boy. It grants every nature transformation, sight of chakra, and the full set of the Six Paths techniques.

Nagato is a shinobi of Amegakure and a descendant of the Uzumaki clan, best known by the name Pain. A war orphan who wielded the legendary Rinnegan, he founded the Akatsuki with his friends to end conflict — and, after losing them, became the man who destroyed Konohagakure in the name of a brutal kind of peace.
Nagato grew up in Amegakure, a small country worn down by the wars its larger neighbours fought across it. He was a gentle, quiet child, quick to cry and slow to harm anyone. He was also, without knowing it, carrying the Rinnegan — the rarest of the great dōjutsu, secretly transplanted into him as an infant by Madara Uchiha.
When Konoha shinobi broke into his home during the war and killed his parents, the terrified Nagato killed them in return — the Rinnegan acting before he understood what he was doing. Orphaned and starving, he wandered until he found two other orphans, Yahiko and Konan.
The three grew up together, and were trained for a time by the Sannin Jiraiya. When Jiraiya left, they founded the Akatsuki — not the criminal organisation it later became, but a movement meant to end the wars that had taken everything from them.
Nagato grows up quiet and tender-hearted in war-torn Amegakure. The Rinnegan wakes for the first time the night Konoha shinobi kill his parents — and the frightened boy kills them back before he understands what his eyes have done.
Orphaned and starving, Nagato wanders until he meets Yahiko and Konan, two other war orphans. The three become a family of their own, scraping through a country that has no place for them.
The Sannin Jiraiya takes in the three orphans and trains them for a few years before moving on. He marks Nagato, with his Rinnegan, as the child his master's prophecy foretold.
The three found the Akatsuki — not yet the criminal organisation, but a movement to end war and bring peace to their country. The charismatic Yahiko leads; Nagato is its quiet strength.
Hanzō of Amegakure, backed by Konoha's Danzō Shimura, ambushes the group and uses Konan as a hostage. Yahiko throws himself onto Nagato's blade to save her. Grief, and the masked Obito's words, turn Nagato toward a darker idea: that peace can only come through shared pain.
His body crippled, Nagato fights through the Six Paths of Pain — six corpses he controls remotely, the first of them Yahiko's. As Pain he leads the new Akatsuki and levels Konohagakure searching for Naruto.
Naruto refuses to answer Nagato's pain with more pain, and asks him to believe in a different answer. Nagato does. He gives his life to the Outer Path to revive everyone he killed in Konoha, and dies entrusting the dream to Naruto.
Nagato's power is the Rinnegan, the rarest and most powerful of the three great dōjutsu, implanted in him as a child by Madara Uchiha. Through it he commands all five basic natures and the Six Paths of Pain — six reanimated corpses, each carrying one of the Rinnegan's abilities, that he controls remotely as extensions of himself. As a descendant of the Uzumaki clan his life force is vast, which is part of how one body could drive six.
The legendary dōjutsu Madara secretly gave Nagato as a boy. It grants every nature transformation, sight of chakra, and the full set of the Six Paths techniques.
Nagato channels his chakra into six corpses fitted with black receivers, each holding one Path of the Rinnegan. He fights through them from a distance, his own crippled body hidden away.
The Deva Path's pinnacle technique — a wave of repulsive force. At full power, a single Shinra Tensei flattened all of Konoha into a crater.
Nagato forms a black core that drags earth and rubble around it into a small moon, sealing whatever is trapped inside.
A technique that rules over life and death itself. Nagato uses it once — to revive everyone he killed in Konoha — and it costs him his life.
Yahiko
Nagato's closest friend and the leader of the original Akatsuki. His death broke Nagato — and afterward Nagato kept him close in the worst way possible, as the Deva Path body and the face of Pain.
Konan
The third of the orphan trio, and the one who stayed at Nagato's side through everything — the dream, the fall, and the years as Pain — to the very end.
Jiraiya
The Sannin who took in three starving orphans and trained them. Years later, Nagato — as Pain — killed his old teacher, a loss that struck both of them hard.
Naruto Uzumaki
A fellow Uzumaki, and the one person who answered Nagato's pain with something other than more pain. Naruto's refusal to hate him is what finally reached Nagato.
Obito Uchiha
The masked man calling himself Tobi, who appeared after Yahiko's death and turned Nagato's grief into a doctrine — steering the new Akatsuki toward his own ends.
Madara Uchiha
The man who secretly transplanted the Rinnegan into the infant Nagato, intending to recover the eyes — and a path back to life — long after.
Hanzō
The leader of Amegakure who ambushed the original Akatsuki and forced the death of Yahiko. Nagato's hatred of him shaped everything Pain became.
Danzō Shimura
The Konoha elder who backed Hanzō's ambush. To Nagato, he was proof that the Hidden Leaf itself was a source of the suffering he meant to answer.

Pain's Assault on Konoha
Nagato is one of the easiest characters to pin down once a rare column shows. His village is Amegakure, a hidden village almost no other roster character belongs to. He carries the Rinnegan, the rarest Kekkei Genkai on the board, and through it every one of the five basic chakra natures. He also belongs to the Uzumaki clan, a small bloodline. His village, clan, and Kekkei Genkai are all rare, so a single green on any one of them narrows the pool to a handful. Nagato debuts during Pain's Assault on Konoha, fairly late, so the Debut Arc arrow tends to point up.
