Also known as Snake Sannin, Legendary Sannin, Sound Founder, Hebi-sennin
Orochimaru is one of Konohagakure's three Legendary Sannin, and for much of the series its most dangerous traitor. Obsessed with learning every jutsu in existence — and with cheating death long enough to do it — he abandoned the village, founded the Hidden Sound, and made himself something close to immortal.
Orochimaru was orphaned as a child. His only real sources of affection were his teacher, the Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi, and his two teammates, Jiraiya and Tsunade.
The three of them survived a battle against the Ame leader Hanzō during the Second Shinobi World War, and were named the Legendary Sannin for it. Orochimaru was the most gifted of them, and the most arrogant.
From that brilliance grew a single ambition — to learn every jutsu in the world. He came to believe one lifetime was not enough for it, and so the second goal followed the first: to never have to die.
Orochimaru loses his parents young, and clings to the few people who give him warmth — his teacher Hiruzen, and his teammates Jiraiya and Tsunade.
After surviving Hanzō in the Second Shinobi World War, Orochimaru is named one of the Legendary Sannin. He is the most brilliant of the three — and the arrogance grows with the gift.
Orochimaru fixes on a single ambition: to learn every technique in the world. One life is not long enough for it — so he sets out to solve death itself.
Orochimaru's pursuit of immortality turns to illegal experiments on Konoha's own citizens. Caught, he chooses to flee the village rather than answer for them.
Orochimaru founds the Hidden Sound, masters a body-transfer immortality, and marks chosen shinobi with his Cursed Seal. He sets his sights on Sasuke Uchiha as a future vessel.
Revived during the Fourth Shinobi World War, Orochimaru is quieter — still entirely self-serving, but with his research turned from manipulating life toward understanding it. He never quite repents; he only cools.
Orochimaru set out to learn every technique in the world, and his arsenal shows it — eight separate categories of jutsu, every basic chakra nature, a body remade for survival. He fights through snakes, raises the dead, and rebuilds himself again and again so the collecting never has to stop.

The immortality jutsu. Rather than extend his own body, Orochimaru transfers his soul into a new host and takes it over — a renewal he can manage once every few years.
A brand Orochimaru places on chosen shinobi, granting borrowed power at the price of being bound, body and will, to him.
The Reanimation Jutsu, which raises the dead as near-unkillable soldiers. Orochimaru perfected it as a tool of research and war alike.
Eight separate categories of technique — the collected arsenal of a man who set out, quite literally, to learn every jutsu there is.
Hiruzen Sarutobi
The Third Hokage, and the teacher who loved Orochimaru like a son. Hiruzen saw what his student was becoming, and could not bring himself to stop him in time.
Jiraiya
A fellow Sannin and Orochimaru's closest equal. Jiraiya never gave up on him — and faced him across a battlefield anyway.
Tsunade
The third of the Legendary Sannin. When Orochimaru found Tsunade in her exile, he tried to use her grief and her fear of blood to bend her to his side.
Sasuke Uchiha
The Uchiha Orochimaru lured away from Konoha, trained, and intended to claim as his next body — until Sasuke turned the arrangement around.
Kabuto Yakushi
Orochimaru's right hand and disciple, who studied his master so closely that he eventually tried to become him.
Kimimaro
Orochimaru's most devoted follower, who wanted nothing more than to be chosen as his master's vessel.
Anko Mitarashi
A former student of Orochimaru's, abandoned by him and left bearing his Cursed Seal — a reminder of the teacher he once was.

Chūnin Exams
Orochimaru is one of the most distinctive answers on the board. His Jutsu Types column reads eight separate categories — more than any other character in the roster, and a near-certain giveaway on its own. His Legendary Sannin attribute, a title held by exactly three characters, and his Rogue rank confirm him quickly. He has no clan. Orochimaru debuts in the Chūnin Exams arc, early, so the Debut Arc arrow points down toward him.
