The Academy Teacher
Iruka's true vocation — shaping the next generation of Konoha's shinobi from the Academy's classrooms.
うみのイルカ · 海野伊鲁卡
Also known as Iruka, Iruka Sensei
Iruka Umino is a chūnin of Konohagakure and a teacher at its Academy. Orphaned as a child by the Nine-Tails, he understood loneliness from the inside — and became the first person ever to look at Naruto Uzumaki and see a student of the Leaf, rather than the beast sealed within him.
Iruka Umino was a shinobi of Konohagakure, of no clan, born into an ordinary family of the Hidden Leaf.
Twelve years before the series begins, the Nine-Tails attacked the village. Iruka's mother and father were killed defending it — and Iruka, still a child, was left an orphan.
The loss changed him. A young Iruka became loud and disruptive, a class clown acting out for the attention he no longer got at home — the same loneliness Naruto would later carry.
Iruka's mother and father die defending Konoha during the Nine-Tails' attack on the village. Iruka, still a boy, is pulled from the battlefield and left without them.
The orphaned Iruka becomes loud and disruptive — a class clown chasing attention. It is the very loneliness, and the very mask, that Naruto Uzumaki would later wear.
Iruka grows up and takes a post at the Konoha Academy. Teaching becomes his vocation — the work of shaping the village's next generation of shinobi.
Naruto carries the Nine-Tails — the beast that killed Iruka's parents. For a long time, Iruka cannot get past that, and keeps the loud, lonely boy at the same distance everyone else does.
When Mizuki betrays the village and turns Naruto's secret against him, Iruka shields Naruto with his own body, tells the boy he believes in him, and lets him graduate — the first faith Naruto is ever shown.
From that night on, Iruka is the one person Naruto truly respects — a steady, lasting presence, the closest thing to family the boy had, and a teacher who never left his life.
Iruka was never a front-line powerhouse, and the series never asks him to be. He is a solid chūnin, grounded in ninjutsu and the Earth Release, and capable enough when the village needs him. But his real strength is the kind a roster column cannot show — the ability to read a struggling child, to see what they actually need, and to reach the student no one else would.

Prologue (Land of Waves)
Iruka's Chūnin rank is the standout signal — unusual on a board made mostly of jōnin, Kage, and rogue ninja. His Konohagakure village trims a little, his jutsu types are just Ninjutsu and Taijutsu, and his Nature Types column holds only Earth, a clean single-nature reading. He has no clan, no Kekkei Genkai, and an empty Attributes column. He debuts in the Prologue, the earliest arc, so the Debut Arc arrow points down toward him.

I lost my parents to the Nine-Tails. For years I let that stand between me and the boy who carried it. I was wrong, and I am glad I stopped being wrong in time.
Naruto is not the Nine-Tails. He is a student of the Hidden Leaf. He is my student. Take that back.
A teacher's job is not to make strong shinobi. It is to make sure no child has to grow up feeling unseen.
