Shadow Imitation Technique
The Nara clan's signature jutsu. Shikamaru extends and merges his shadow with a target's, locking them in place and forcing them to mirror his every movement.

Also known as Shikamaru, Lazy Genius, Shadow Strategist
Shikamaru Nara is a shinobi of Konohagakure and a member of the Nara clan. Famously lazy and just as famously brilliant, he would rather watch clouds than fight — but his teacher measured his IQ at over 200, and by the Fourth Shinobi World War he had become the Hidden Leaf's most trusted strategist.
Shikamaru was born into the Nara clan, a Konoha family known for two things — keeping deer, and producing exceptional strategic minds. He inherited the second trait in full, and showed almost no interest in using it.
As a boy he was the picture of wasted potential: bored in class, asleep in the grass, dodging anything that looked like effort. His teacher, Asuma Sarutobi, worked the truth out by playing shōgi against him — and never once won. Asuma put his student's IQ above 200.
Shikamaru's laziness was real, but so was the line beneath it. When the village or his friends were genuinely at risk, the boy who called everything "troublesome" would walk calmly into danger he did not expect to survive.
Shikamaru is born into the Nara clan with one of the sharpest minds of his generation, and spends his early years hiding it — bored, asleep in the grass, dodging anything that looks like work.
Shikamaru forfeits his own final match in the Chūnin Exams — and is still the only rookie of his year promoted to chūnin. The judges saw what Asuma already knew: his real weapon is the planning he does before a fight starts.
Shikamaru leads the mission to bring Sasuke back, his first time in command. Every member of his team is badly hurt, and the mission fails. The guilt nearly convinces him to give up being a shinobi for good.
Asuma is killed by the Akatsuki's Hidan. Shikamaru takes the loss hard, and grieving, he plans a careful, cold revenge — trapping Hidan with his shadow and burying the immortal, dismembered Akatsuki member in a pit forever.
Shikamaru comes through the worst of his grief carrying Asuma's lesson — that the "king" worth protecting is the next generation — and steps fully into the role of a strategist his village can rely on.
In the Fourth Shinobi World War, Shikamaru is one of the central planners of the Allied Shinobi Forces, helping run the entire war effort from the command tent.
Shikamaru is, by his teacher's measure, a genius with an IQ over 200 — and one of the laziest characters in the series. His real weapon is his mind: he can hold a whole battlefield in his head, read an opponent's patterns, and plan dozens of moves ahead, the way he plays shōgi. His combat is built on the Nara clan's shadow techniques, which pin an enemy in place while he thinks.
The Nara clan's signature jutsu. Shikamaru extends and merges his shadow with a target's, locking them in place and forcing them to mirror his every movement.
An advanced shadow technique — Shikamaru shapes his shadow into spears and threads that bind and pierce, rather than only holding a target still.
Once a target is caught in his shadow, Shikamaru raises tendrils of shadow to seize them by the throat.
Shikamaru's true technique. He maps every position, every habit, and every option, and plans dozens of moves ahead — winning fights, and later whole campaigns, before they are fought.
The chakra-flow trench knives Shikamaru inherits from his sensei. Channelling chakra into them extends their reach and edge.
Asuma Sarutobi
Team 10's sensei, and the man who uncovered Shikamaru's genius over a shōgi board. His death at the hands of Hidan is the turning point of Shikamaru's whole story.
Chōji Akimichi
A teammate on Team 10 and Shikamaru's oldest, closest friend. Shikamaru valued Chōji's loyalty long before the rest of the class saw past his easy-going manner.
Ino Yamanaka
A teammate on Team 10, completing the Ino–Shika–Chō trio whose three clans have fought together for generations.
Shikaku Nara
Shikamaru's father — a strategist as sharp as his son, and the jōnin commander who directed the Allied Shinobi Forces in the war.
Temari
The Sunagakure kunoichi who became Shikamaru's frequent counterpart — first an opponent, then an ally, then something steadier.
Naruto Uzumaki
A friend Shikamaru chose to back. He decided early that if Naruto became Hokage, he would carry the workload from the shadows so Naruto could lead.
Hidan
The immortal Akatsuki member who killed Asuma. Hidan is the target of the coldest, most deliberate plan Shikamaru ever set in motion.

Prologue (Land of Waves)
Shikamaru is a moderate-signal answer with one useful quirk. His Nara clan narrows the board to a small family. His rank is the giveaway most players miss: Shikamaru is a Chūnin — and famously the only member of the Konoha rookies promoted after their first Chūnin Exams. Among the well-known rookies, that rank is close to unique to him. His Konoha village, his plain ninjutsu and taijutsu, and his common natures do little on their own. He debuts in the Prologue, so the Debut Arc arrow points down toward him.

Asuma's child — and every child of this village — that is the "king" we have to protect.
How troublesome.
I don't want to be Hokage. It's too much trouble. I would rather support the one who is — from the shadows.
