   Chōji grows up in the Akimichi clan with real strength and almost no faith in it. Teased for his size at the Academy, he carries a quiet lack of confidence that his talent alone never fixes.

   Shikamaru Nara defends Chōji when other children mock him, and the two become inseparable. The friendship does more for Chōji than any drill — and lands them both on Team 10 with Ino under Asuma.

   Sasuke Retrieval

   Tricked onto the team

   When the mission to retrieve Sasuke is formed, Chōji hesitates — until Shikamaru and Naruto eat his favourite snacks outside his house to bait him into joining. On the mission he is sent against the Sound Four's Jirōbō.

   All three colours

   Outmatched by Jirōbō, Chōji takes the Akimichi clan's forbidden pills — and when Jirōbō mocks Shikamaru, he swallows the deadly third. He wins, and very nearly dies of it, surviving only through Tsunade's care.

   Past the pill

   Chōji comes through Team 10's loss of Asuma and the missions that follow, slowly turning the strength his friends always saw into strength he can see himself.

   Butterfly, on his own

   In the Fourth Shinobi World War, Chōji forms the wings of Butterfly Chōji Mode without the pills at all — and lands a blow heavy enough to turn the tide of a battle.

Chōji is the physically strongest of the Konoha 11. As an Akimichi, he converts the calories he eats into chakra, and uses it to expand his body — or single parts of it — to enormous size. His clan's deepest techniques trade life force for raw power, and for years his real limit was not his strength but his belief in it.

• Who is Chōji Akimichi?+

  Chōji Akimichi is a shinobi of Konohagakure and a member of the Akimichi clan. The physically strongest of the Konoha 11, he is part of Team 10's Ino–Shika–Chō trio and is set to become the sixteenth head of his clan.
• What are the Akimichi clan's abilities?+

  The Akimichi clan converts the calories its members eat into chakra, then uses that chakra to expand the body — or single body parts — to enormous size. Chōji's techniques, from the Expansion Jutsu to the Human Boulder, all draw on that single principle.

  The Three Coloured Pills are a forbidden Akimichi technique. The green, yellow, and red pills each unlock a greater level of power by burning the user's own life force. The red pill is so dangerous it can kill the user — Chōji took all three against Jirōbō.

  No. Chōji nearly dies after taking all three Akimichi pills in his fight against Jirōbō during the Sasuke Retrieval mission, but Tsunade's medical care saves him. He survives the series and fights through the Fourth Shinobi World War.

  Chōji's closest friend is Shikamaru Nara. Shikamaru stood up for Chōji when other children mocked his size, and the two have been inseparable since. Defending Shikamaru's honour is what pushed Chōji to take the deadly third pill against Jirōbō.
