Expansion Jutsu
The Akimichi clan's foundation. Chōji converts stored calories into chakra and swells his body, or a single limb, to many times its size — turning a punch into something closer to a falling boulder.

Chōji Akimichi is a shinobi of Konohagakure and a member of the Akimichi clan. The physically strongest of the Konoha 11, he converts the food he eats into chakra to swell his body to enormous size. Insecure for much of his youth, Chōji's real growth was learning to believe in the strength his friends always saw.
Chōji was born into the Akimichi clan, one of Konoha's oldest and strongest families, and is set to become its sixteenth head after his father, Chōza. As a child he was teased for his size, and the teasing left a deep dent in his confidence.
One classmate did not join in. Shikamaru Nara stood up for him, and the two became inseparable — a friendship that did more for Chōji than any training. They were placed together on Team 10, with Ino Yamanaka, under Asuma Sarutobi.
Both Chōza and Asuma said the same thing about Chōji: his kindness was his greatest strength, and his lack of self-belief his greatest weakness. His story is the slow work of closing that gap.
Chōji grows up in the Akimichi clan with real strength and almost no faith in it. Teased for his size at the Academy, he carries a quiet lack of confidence that his talent alone never fixes.
Shikamaru Nara defends Chōji when other children mock him, and the two become inseparable. The friendship does more for Chōji than any drill — and lands them both on Team 10 with Ino under Asuma.
When the mission to retrieve Sasuke is formed, Chōji hesitates — until Shikamaru and Naruto eat his favourite snacks outside his house to bait him into joining. On the mission he is sent against the Sound Four's Jirōbō.
Outmatched by Jirōbō, Chōji takes the Akimichi clan's forbidden pills — and when Jirōbō mocks Shikamaru, he swallows the deadly third. He wins, and very nearly dies of it, surviving only through Tsunade's care.
Chōji comes through Team 10's loss of Asuma and the missions that follow, slowly turning the strength his friends always saw into strength he can see himself.
In the Fourth Shinobi World War, Chōji forms the wings of Butterfly Chōji Mode without the pills at all — and lands a blow heavy enough to turn the tide of a battle.
Chōji is the physically strongest of the Konoha 11. As an Akimichi, he converts the calories he eats into chakra, and uses it to expand his body — or single parts of it — to enormous size. His clan's deepest techniques trade life force for raw power, and for years his real limit was not his strength but his belief in it.
The Akimichi clan's foundation. Chōji converts stored calories into chakra and swells his body, or a single limb, to many times its size — turning a punch into something closer to a falling boulder.
Chōji expands, curls up, and rolls — a spinning mass of force that flattens whatever stands in its path.
The Akimichi clan's forbidden pills. The green, yellow, and red pills each unlock more power by burning the user's own life — and the red can kill the one who takes it.
Chōji forms wings of pure chakra and strikes with the Butterfly Bullet — a single blow heavy enough to turn the course of a battle.
Even with no technique active, Chōji is the physically strongest of his year — his clan's calorie-to-chakra conditioning is behind every ordinary blow he lands.
Shikamaru Nara
Chōji's oldest and closest friend — the boy who stood up for him when others would not. Defending Shikamaru's honour is what pushed Chōji to swallow the deadly third pill against Jirōbō.
Ino Yamanaka
A teammate on Team 10, completing the Ino–Shika–Chō trio whose three clans have fought side by side for generations.
Asuma Sarutobi
Team 10's sensei. Asuma told Chōji plainly that his kindness was his greatest strength — a verdict Chōji needed to hear more than once.
Chōza Akimichi
Chōji's father and the head of the Akimichi clan. Chōza is the model Chōji measures himself against, and the clan leader Chōji is meant to one day become.
Naruto Uzumaki
A friend, and a fellow member of the team sent to bring Sasuke back. Naruto helped bait Chōji onto that mission — and never doubted his strength.
Jirōbō
The Sound Four member Chōji fought in the Sasuke Retrieval mission. Jirōbō's mockery of Shikamaru is what drove Chōji to the limit, and past it.

Prologue (Land of Waves)
Chōji is a moderate-signal answer. His Akimichi clan narrows the board to a small family — the same kind of cut a Nara or a Yamanaka clan reading gives. His Chūnin rank trims a little further. His Konoha village, his plain ninjutsu and taijutsu, and his common fire-and-earth natures do little on their own. Chōji debuts in the Prologue, the earliest arc, so the Debut Arc arrow points down toward him.
