Also known as White Fang of the Leaf, Konoha no Shiroi Kiba, Kakashi's Father
Sakumo Hatake is a jōnin of Konohagakure's Hatake clan, renowned across the shinobi world as the White Fang of the Leaf — a shinobi whose strength was said to surpass the Legendary Sannin. He was also the father of Kakashi, and a man undone not by any enemy, but by the village he had given everything.
Sakumo Hatake was a jōnin of Konohagakure's Hatake clan, of the generation before the teachers of Team 7.
His name came from his blade — the White Light Chakra Sabre, which trailed a streak of white chakra with every swing. From it, the shinobi world called him the White Fang of the Leaf.
For all his fame and power, Sakumo stayed a humble, kind man, and a devoted father. He raised his only son, Kakashi, who came to idolise him entirely.
Sakumo earns his name with the White Light Chakra Sabre — a blade that trails white chakra through the air. As the White Fang of the Leaf, his reputation spreads across the shinobi world.
Sakumo's strength is spoken of as greater, alone, than that of Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru together. Enemy forces are said to have broken and fled at the mere sight of him.
On a mission, Sakumo is forced to a decision: complete the objective, or save the lives of his teammates. He chooses his comrades — and abandons the mission to bring them home alive.
Konohagakure does not thank him. The village — and even the teammates he saved — brand Sakumo a failure and a disgrace for putting their lives above the mission.
No enemy could beat Sakumo. The scorn of the village he had been so loyal to could. The shame and isolation press on him until the famed White Fang is a broken man.
Sakumo takes his own life. His son Kakashi carries the wound for years — and, in time, comes to understand that his father's choice was the right one, and to teach it forward.
Sakumo was a swordsman whose reputation could win a battle before it began. His White Light Chakra Sabre, trailing its streak of white chakra, was the centre of a kenjutsu style strong enough that his name alone made enemy forces retreat. The shinobi world held that his power, on its own, surpassed that of all three Legendary Sannin together.

Sakumo's Hatake clan is a rare signal — on the board, he shares it with only one other character, his son Kakashi. His Konohagakure village and Jōnin rank trim the answer, his Nature Types column pairs Lightning with Earth, and he has no Kekkei Genkai and an empty Attributes column. He debuts in the Kakashi Gaiden arc, a late-told flashback, so the Debut Arc arrow points up toward him.

A mission can be attempted again. A teammate, once lost, cannot. I will not pretend I do not know which matters.
I gave this village everything I had. I did not think it would ask my pride as well.
Kakashi — be stronger than I was. Not with the blade. With knowing what is worth keeping.
