Also known as Hayate, Chūnin Exams Proctor
Hayate Gekkō was a Konoha special jōnin and a master swordsman, remembered as the pale, constantly coughing proctor of the Chūnin Exam preliminaries. His Dance of the Crescent Moon could strike from three directions at once. He loved the ANBU kunoichi Yūgao — and died when he overheard the Sand and Sound's invasion plot.
Hayate was a special jōnin of the Hidden Leaf, frail and chronically ill, with a cough that rarely left him. The weakness was real, but it hid one of the village's finest swordsmen; the blade in his hands never coughed.
Most of Konoha knew him as the proctor of the Chūnin Exam preliminaries, the gaunt official who called the brutal one-on-one matches between the surviving genin. Behind that role was a quiet man with a life of his own — and a love, the ANBU kunoichi Yūgao Uzuki.
His story is a short one. While scouting at night, Hayate overheard Baki of the Sand discussing the invasion of Konoha. The knowledge made him too dangerous to live, and he was cut down before he could carry the warning home.
Hayate is a special jōnin whose constant cough and pale face suggest a sick man, not a warrior. The impression is wrong: with a sword in hand he is among the most dangerous fighters in Konoha.
His signature is the Dance of the Crescent Moon, a sword assault that comes at a target from three directions at the same time. It is a technique that rewards the precision a lifetime of training gave him.
Hayate oversees the Chūnin Exam preliminaries, the sudden one-on-one round that thins the field after the Forest of Death. Coughing through every announcement, he is the steady hand running the bracket.
Away from the exam, Hayate shares his life with the ANBU kunoichi Yūgao Uzuki. Their bond is the warm, private centre of an otherwise grim, dutiful career.
Scouting by night, Hayate overhears Baki of the Sand discussing the coming invasion of Konoha. The intelligence is vital — and it makes him a man the conspirators cannot allow to leave.
Baki kills Hayate with the Blade of Wind to keep the plot secret, before the warning can reach the village. His death is one of the first signs of the storm about to break over Konoha.
Hayate was a master swordsman whose skill never bowed to his failing health. His Dance of the Crescent Moon struck from three angles at once, backed by Wind and Lightning nature and a scout's quiet feet. Frail as he looked, few opponents wanted to face his blade.

Hayate has no clan and no Kekkei Genkai, but his Ninja Rank is an uncommon one: Special Jōnin, a reading few characters share. His Nature Types column pairs Wind and Lightning, and his Jutsu Types column includes Kenjutsu for his sword. A Konoha shinobi who debuts in the Chūnin Exams arc, his Vital Status hint would read deceased.
