Also known as Kurenai, Genjutsu Mistress
Kurenai Yūhi is a jōnin of Konohagakure and the leader of Team 8 — one of the village's foremost genjutsu specialists. A protective, big-sister mentor, she is remembered as much for her bond with Asuma Sarutobi and the daughter she raised after his death as for her illusions.
Kurenai's gift for genjutsu showed early — strong enough, as a child, to draw the notice of the Third Hokage himself. She graduated from the Academy at the age of nine.
She was placed on a genin team alongside Asuma Sarutobi. The two grew up beside each other, their steady temperaments fitting together — the start of a bond that would last the rest of Asuma's life.
Kurenai rose to jōnin shortly before the new generation of genin came of age, and was entrusted with a squad of her own — Team 8.
Kurenai's childhood gift for genjutsu is strong enough that the Third Hokage takes note of it. She graduates the Academy young, already marked as an illusion specialist.
Kurenai serves on a genin team alongside Asuma Sarutobi. The two grow up beside each other, their quiet, steady manners fitting together into a bond that lasts.
Kurenai becomes a jōnin and takes Team 8 — Hinata Hyūga, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shino Aburame — a squad built for tracking and reconnaissance.
Kurenai leads Team 8 with a warm, big-sister manner, and looks out for Hinata in particular — she knows exactly how the Hyūga main house had judged the girl.
Asuma is killed by the Akatsuki's Hidan while Kurenai is pregnant with their child. She carries the grief, and the pregnancy, through the rest of the war.
After the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kurenai gives birth to her and Asuma's daughter, Mirai, and raises her as a single mother — with Shikamaru, Asuma's closest student, stepping in as a surrogate uncle.
Kurenai is one of Konoha's foremost genjutsu specialists — skilled enough to teach illusion at the Academy itself. She casts a wide range of genjutsu, sees through an enemy's illusions almost the instant they land, and works as a sensor, a fit for her tracking-focused squad.

Kurenai's signature illusion. A target believes they are bound fast to a tree as her blade closes in on them.
Illusions built around drifting petals and blossoms, disorienting an opponent's senses before the real attack lands.
Kurenai recognises she is trapped in an illusion almost the instant it takes hold, and dispels it before it can do its work.
A sensor's reach for chakra signatures — a natural fit for the tracking and reconnaissance work of Team 8.
Hinata Hyūga
A Team 8 student. Kurenai was quietly protective of Hinata, knowing well how the Hyūga main house had judged the girl as weak.
Kiba Inuzuka
A Team 8 student. Kurenai gave the loud, impulsive Kiba a steady hand to push against.
Shino Aburame
A Team 8 student. Kurenai trusted the quiet, deliberate Shino with the squad's most careful tracking work.
Asuma Sarutobi
The jōnin Kurenai grew up alongside, loved, and married. Asuma was killed by Hidan while Kurenai was carrying their daughter.
Shikamaru Nara
Asuma's closest student. After his sensei's death, Shikamaru stepped in as a surrogate uncle to Kurenai's daughter, keeping a promise to the man they both lost.
Hiruzen Sarutobi
The Third Hokage, whose notice of Kurenai's childhood genjutsu talent helped set the course of her early career.

Chūnin Exams
Kurenai is an honest low-signal answer. She has no clan, no Kekkei Genkai, and no attributes, so most columns do nothing to narrow her down. Her one real tell is the Genjutsu entry in her Jutsu Types column, shared by only a small set of illusion specialists. Her Konoha village, Jōnin rank, and common natures rarely help on their own. Kurenai debuts in the Chūnin Exams arc, early, so the Debut Arc arrow points down toward her.
