Sand Manipulation
Gaara controls vast amounts of sand, drawn from the gourd on his back and from the ground itself. It moves to attack or defend without a command from him.

Also known as Gaara of the Desert, Fifth Kazekage, Sabaku no Gaara
Gaara is a shinobi of Sunagakure, the jinchūriki of the One-Tailed Shukaku, and the youngest son of the Fourth Kazekage. He begins the series as a feared, murderous antagonist known as Gaara of the Desert, and grows — after a defeat at Naruto's hands — into Suna's Fifth Kazekage and one of its most devoted protectors.
Gaara is the youngest child of Rasa, the Fourth Kazekage of Sunagakure. Before he was born, his father had the One-Tailed Shukaku sealed inside him, meaning to raise a living weapon for the village. His mother, Karura, died around the time of his birth.
Shukaku's bloodlust gave the child night terrors, and his sand defended him from any threat on its own — which made him impossible to control and frightening to be near. Suna came to see Gaara as a monster, and in time his own father ordered him killed.
The one person who seemed to love him was his uncle, Yashamaru. When Yashamaru was sent to assassinate him and told Gaara, as he died, that his mother had never loved him either, the boy broke. He carved the kanji for "love" into his forehead and decided he would exist only for himself.
Rasa has Shukaku sealed into his unborn son, intending to raise a weapon for Sunagakure. Gaara's mother dies around his birth, and the village watches the child with fear from his first day.
Gaara's uncle Yashamaru is the one person who seems to care for him — until he is ordered to kill Gaara, and tells the boy his mother never loved him before he dies. Gaara carves the kanji for love into his own forehead and turns inward.
Gaara grows into a murderous, feared jinchūriki. He fights to inflict as much harm as he can, and he kills because proving he can is the only way he has left to feel that he exists at all.
In the Chūnin Exams Gaara fights Naruto Uzumaki — another jinchūriki, raised in the same loneliness, who somehow found friends worth protecting. The loss, and Naruto's words, crack something open in him.
Gaara turns his strength toward protecting Suna and is named its Fifth Kazekage, remarkably young. The village that once feared him slowly comes to trust the leader he chooses to be.
The Akatsuki's Deidara captures Gaara, and Shukaku is extracted — which kills him. The elder Chiyo gives her own life to revive him, and Suna mourns and welcomes him back. The boy who lived only for himself is, at last, loved.
Gaara commands a division of the Allied Shinobi Forces and proves a steady, trusted leader. On the battlefield he reconciles with his reanimated father, Rasa, and finally hears why Rasa did what he did.
Gaara fights almost entirely through sand. As Shukaku's jinchūriki he commands it without conscious effort — a layer of it shields him on its own, which is why nothing reached him in his early years. His chakra natures are Wind and Earth, and he inherited the Magnet Release kekkei genkai from his father, which lets him pack his sand denser and faster. He leaned on the sand so heavily that close-quarters combat was long his weak point.
Gaara controls vast amounts of sand, drawn from the gourd on his back and from the ground itself. It moves to attack or defend without a command from him.
An automatic layer of sand guards Gaara from attacks he never sees coming. A second, denser shell of sand can cover his body directly.
Gaara wraps a target in sand and crushes it with a clench of his fist. It is the technique that earned him the name Gaara of the Desert.
Inherited from his father, the Fourth Kazekage. Gaara uses magnetism to compress his sand into a far harder, faster weapon than loose sand alone.
Before the Akatsuki extracted it, the One-Tailed beast inside Gaara fed his sand and, left unchecked, took him over. Even without it, his sand control remained.
Naruto Uzumaki
The fellow jinchūriki who changed the course of Gaara's life. Raised in the same loneliness, Naruto had found friends worth protecting — and beating Gaara, then refusing to hate him, showed Gaara another way to exist.
Temari
Gaara's older sister. She feared him for years, like the rest of Suna, and grew genuinely close to him only once he began to change.
Kankurō
Gaara's older brother. Once wary of him, Kankurō becomes one of his firmest supporters — and is nearly killed trying to stop the Akatsuki from taking him.
Rasa
Gaara's father and the Fourth Kazekage. Rasa sealed Shukaku into his son, used him as a weapon, and ordered his death — and only at the war, reanimated, admits the regret behind it.
Yashamaru
Gaara's uncle, and the one person who showed him kindness as a child. Being ordered to assassinate Gaara — and the lie he told before dying — is the wound the rest of Gaara's story grows from.
Chiyo
The Sunagakure elder who sealed Shukaku into the infant Gaara. Years later, regretting it, she gives her own life to revive him after the Akatsuki's extraction kills him.
Shukaku
The One-Tailed beast sealed inside Gaara. For most of his life Shukaku was a source of torment and night terrors as much as power, until the Akatsuki tore it out of him.
Deidara
The Akatsuki member who captured Gaara for the One-Tail. Their fight over Sunagakure is one of the hardest Gaara faces as Kazekage.

Gaara stands out fast on a Konoha-heavy board. His Sunagakure village already trims the roster, his Kage rank trims it again, and the Jinchūriki attribute points to the short list of nine tailed-beast hosts. The real giveaway is his Kekkei Genkai — Magnet Release is held by only a handful of characters. His Wind-and-Earth natures and plain ninjutsu and taijutsu are the common columns. Gaara debuts in the Chūnin Exams arc, early, so the Debut Arc arrow usually points down toward him.
