Also known as One-Tails, Ichibi, Sand Spirit
Shukaku is the One-Tail, the smallest of the nine tailed beasts — a sand-brown tanuki out of folklore. Once a wild, sleepless terror sealed within Gaara, it spent most of its existence feared and used. By the end, it had found in Gaara the same kindness it remembered from its very first host.
Shukaku is one of the nine tailed beasts, created when Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki divided the chakra of the Ten-Tails into nine creatures and named each.
Its form is a tanuki — the Japanese raccoon dog, a creature of folklore known for mischief and shape-shifting. The folklore runs through Shukaku's whole story.
One old tale tells of a tanuki sealed inside a tea kettle. Shukaku was reported to have been sealed exactly so — and its first host was a kind monk named Bunpuku.
Shukaku comes into being when Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki splits the Ten-Tails into nine beasts. The smallest of the nine, it is still given a name and a self of its own.
Shukaku's first jinchūriki is Bunpuku, a monk who treats the One-Tail with gentleness rather than fear. It is a small kindness — and one Shukaku will remember for centuries.
After Bunpuku, the kindness ends. Shukaku is passed from host to host, feared and wielded as a weapon — and the warmth of its first host is buried under a long, cold resentment.
Shukaku is sealed into the newborn Gaara, and the seal is unstable. The One-Tail's bloodlust takes Gaara whenever he sleeps — making a sleepless, isolated terror of the boy's whole childhood.
By the Fourth Shinobi World War, Gaara has changed. He fights to keep Shukaku from being sealed by the enemy — and openly thanks the One-Tail for helping him find his path in life.
Moved, Shukaku comes to see Gaara as it once saw Bunpuku — and fights to protect him just as earnestly. The kindness it had remembered for centuries is, at last, given back to it.
Shukaku is the smallest of the nine tailed beasts, but it is the only one to carry a Kekkei Genkai. It combines wind and earth chakra into Magnet Release, commands the sand its jinchūriki Gaara is famed for, and fires wind blasts strong enough to crater the ground. Stranger still, it alone among the beasts can draw cursed seals from its own markings — and fuse them into a Rasengan.

Shukaku's cursed seals fused into a Rasengan — strong enough to restrain the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki.

Shukaku's Tailed Beast attribute is the giveaway — a column hit only the nine tailed beasts on the board share — and it is the only one of them that also carries a Kekkei Genkai, Magnet Release. Its Village and Ninja Rank columns both read None, it has no clan, and its Nature Types column pairs Wind with Earth. It debuts in the Chūnin Exams era, an early arc, so the Debut Arc arrow points down toward it.

Bunpuku was kind to me once. One monk, centuries ago. I held onto that the whole time the rest of you spent afraid of me.
The boy could not sleep for fear of me. I gave him nothing back then but nightmares. I am not proud of it.
Gaara thanked me. Me. So I will do for him what Bunpuku once did for me — and stand between him and the world.
