   Named by the Sage

   Son Gokū comes into being when Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki splits the Ten-Tails into nine beasts. It is given a name and a self — and, from the first, a fierce pride in both.

   It will not be a number

   Son Gokū detests the name "Four-Tails" and insists on its own. It boasts of its lineage, and holds — without much doubt — that apes are the wiser of ape and human both.

   Enslaved by humans

   Contempt, hardened to hatred

   Sealed and used as a weapon, Son Gokū's contempt for humankind hardens into hatred. To the Four-Tails, humans are simply the species that chains what it cannot match.

   A host who did not chain it

   Son Gokū is sealed within Rōshi of Iwagakure — and Rōshi does not simply imprison it. He seeks to understand the Four-Tails and to work with it, a rare offer the proud beast accepts.

   Taken with its host

   Kisame Hoshigaki defeats Rōshi after a hard fight and delivers him to the Akatsuki. Son Gokū is extracted from its host — and Rōshi's life is lost when it is.

   Reached, against its own creed

   In the war, Naruto Uzumaki tries to free Son Gokū from Tobi's control. The proud beast — which trusts no human — is moved by it, and lends Naruto its chakra before it is sealed away.

Son Gokū fights with fire and stone made one. It can use Fire and Earth Release at the same time, fusing them into Lava Release — a Kekkei Genkai with which the Four-Tails raises volcanoes and breathes a stream of green flame. Behind that sits a great ape's raw strength and a tailed beast's vast chakra, the same well of power that runs through all nine.
